THREE ISRAELIS DEAD, ONE WOUNDED IN SAMARIA STABBING ATTACK:
Three Israelis were killed and one severely wounded in a stabbing attack in the town of Halamish north of Ramallah on Friday evening 21 July 2017. An assailant infiltrated a private home and stabbed four Israeli civilians. Three of the victims died as a result of their wounds, and one was evacuated to a Jerusalem hospital. The terrorist, was shot by a neighbor. Palestinian media identified the attacker as Omar al Abed, age 19, from a village near Ramallah. He left an online manifesto before the attack in which he stated that he felt obligated to act in light of recent events at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. The army released footage showing a blood-covered kitchen floor. The victims were taking part in a Shabbat meal at the time of the attack. Hamas issued a statement of support for the brutal murders, calling it “heroic” and a "necessary reaction" to new Israeli security procedures at the Temple Mount. (J.Post)
‘I LOST MY SENSE OF TIME, BUT DIDN’T LET GO OF THE DOORKNOB’:
Michal Salomon, the wife of Elad Salomon, one of those murdered in the horrific terror attack in Halamish on Friday night, 21 July 2017, recounted the terrifying moments when her husband, his sister Haya, and their father, Yosef, were murdered. Michal and Elad had come with their 5 children to spend Shabbat (the Sabbath) with Elad’s parents, Tova and Yosef. While most of the family remained in the kitchen at the end of the Shabbat meal, Michal had moved to the living room to prepare for a celebration in honor of the birth of the newest grandson. Michal related in a media interview “I saw the profile of a person moving towards the kitchen. The terrorist saw them through the window and entered the house. He didn’t see me, and came directly at them. I immediately took the 3 kids upstairs, where the two youngest children were sleeping. It was important that I, first of all, protect the children no matter what. I started to hear shouts and screams. I held the door with all of my strength, because it wasn’t locked. I lost my sense of time, but I didn’t let go of the doorknob. “I called the police and told them what was happening as my children surrounded me. I heard terrible screams and shots, and after a period which seemed endless, I understood that it was over. I came downstairs and saw Elad. I understood that my husband was no longer alive. (Arutz-7)
TERROR ATTACK THAT KILLED 3 INCITED BY ‘WILD HATRED," NETANYAHU SAYS:
The attack on the Samaria settlement of Halamish that killed three members of one family as they sat at their Shabbat table “was an act of terrorism committed by a reprehensible person incited by wild hatred,” Benjamin Netanyahu said. In a statement released shortly after the end of the Jewish Sabbath, Israel’s prime minister said that the country’s security forces would “take all necessary measures” to maintain security. Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin in a statement issued Saturday night said: “At this difficult time our hearts go out to the bereaved family in Halamish, and to all the community there, after the incomprehensible loss they have endured last night. The difficult pictures, and the thoughts of the children who fled for shelter now dealing with the terrible news – it is truly heartbreaking. Rivlin expressed his appreciation for Israel’s security forces, saying: “I know that we will show no tolerance for those who plot against us, and we will fight terrorism, mercilessly and without compromise. This is the time for the whole free world to denounce terror and incitement, and join with the State of Israel in the war against terror and incitement. One who does not denounce terror is a partner to it, and has a hand in the deterioration of the whole region into a needless, bloody war, which no one wants,” Riviln said. (JTA)
LIBERMAN: ABBAS MUST IMMEDIATELY CONDEMN HALAMISH ‘SLAUGHTER’:
Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman visited the site of Friday’s 21 July terror attack in the settlement of Halamish, which claimed the lives of three Israelis, and said Israel was demanding prompt condemnation of the attack by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Abbas, he said, must issue “a clear condemnation of the massacre committed yesterday against an innocent family that posed a danger to no one, a terrible slaughter carried out during the family’s Shabbat dinner.” Abbas has so far been silent about Friday night’s assault. Before news of the attack broke, Abbas had said he would freeze all contacts with Israel over its actions in Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. Friday 21 July 2017 saw riots around the Old City and the Jerusalem area in response to Israel’s installation of metal detectors at the Temple Mount compound. The Israeli security actions there came in response to a 14 July 2017 terror attack, in which three Arab-Israelis shot dead two Israeli police officers there with guns they had smuggled into the holy site. But Abbas called the act “falsely presented as a security measure” while claiming Israel’s real purpose was “to take control of Al-Aqsa mosque.” (Times of Israel)
IDF FORCES RAID HOME OF TERRORIST WHO CARRIED OUT HALAMISH ATTACK:
IDF forces early Saturday morning 22 July 2017, raided the home of the Palestinian terrorist who murdered three members of an Israeli family the previous evening, and arrested his brother. Officials said they suspected Monir had aided his brother in carrying out the attack. The terrorist's father expressed his criticism of his son's behavior, but the mother praised her son and said he had brought great pride to her family. Security forces continue to look for any additional suspects in the Halamish attack. The army also said it would further boost forces in Judea & Samaria, in addition to the reinforcements already provided due to tensions surrounding new Temple Mount security checks. Four Palestinians have been killed in clashes with Israeli forces since Friday 21 July 2017, over the Temple Mount metal detectors, and another was killed Saturday when a petrol bomb he was planning to throw at Israeli security forces exploded prematurely. (Times of Israel)
ABBAS FREEZES CONTACTS WITH ISRAEL:
Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas announced on Friday 21 July 2017 he was freezing contacts with Israel over its new security procedures at the Temple Mount. Abbas said the freeze would stay in place until Israel lifted the measures. Abbas said the use of metal detector gates was "falsely presented as a security measure to take control over Al-Aqsa mosque". It was unclear if the move would apply to the security coordination that exists between the Palestinian Authority and Israel. (Arutz-7)
FATAH SAYS ‘CAMPAIGN FOR JERUSALEM HAS BEGUN’:
The Palestinian Authority’s ruling Fatah party on Saturday 22 July 2017 called for a continued struggle “to take control of the Al-Aqsa mosque.” In a statement sent to supporters, the movement of PA President Mahmoud Abbas said the “campaign for Jerusalem has effectively begun, and will not stop until a Palestinian victory and the release of the holy sites from Israeli occupation.” Fatah commended Palestinian protesters who rioted in the streets of Jerusalem the previous day against the deployment of metal detectors at the Temple Mount compound, with three protesters killed by Israeli security forces in the violence and some 200 others wounded. The party hailed the demonstrators’ violence "against the enemy," their “acts for the protection of Al-Aqsa and their struggle against the Israeli plans, while sacrificing souls and blood.” The drastic escalation on Friday 21 July 2017 came a week after two Israeli Border Police officers were killed by terrorists at the Temple Mount. In the wake of the attack, Israel closed the site for 48 hours as it searched for more weapons, and then installed metal detector gates at entrances to the compound. In Jerusalem, some Muslims have warned that a religious war is imminent, other say it has begun (Times of Israel)
BENNETT ON BBC: 'READ MY LIPS – TEMPLE MOUNT IS OPEN':
Israel's Education Minister Naftali Bennett explained in an interview with the BBC on Friday 21 July 2017 that the decision to leave the metal detectors at the entrance to the Temple Mount was made in order “to defend everyone who wants to worship on the Temple Mount.” The interview was conducted hours before Friday’s deadly stabbing attack in the Samaria community of Halamish. “The only way that we can defend ourselves is by placing those metal detectors and I think that you’ll realize that there are metal detectors in the Vatican, there are metal detectors in the Western Wall, at Westminster, in Mecca, and there’s no reason that we can’t maintain the metal detectors at the entrance to the Temple Mount,” he added. “The Temple Mount is open to everyone,” Bennett stressed. “The metal detectors are vital for everyone’s security.” Asked about the “anxiety” among Arabs that the status quo on the Temple Mount is being changed, the Jewish Home leader said, “Read my lips: The Temple Mount is open. It’s open for prayers. It’s open for any Muslim who wants to worship. Yes, because of the ‘Day of Rage’ today there’s a temporary dilution of the number of people, but that will be removed the moment we see things are quiet.” (Arutz-7)
