PM NETANYAHU: UNESCO's DENIAL OF HISTORY IS ‘ABSURD.’
Israel’s PM Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday 10 July 2017, welcomed Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Jerusalem. Speaking about Rwanda and Israel's shared legacy, Netanyahu said, "We possess, both of our peoples a tragic legacy. Ours in the Holocaust, you in the great genocide that befell your people.” Netanyahu then honored President Kagame personally led military effort that put a stop to the carnage after more than a million people were butchered. He added that, “It is one of our deepest pleasures to be able to cooperate with you in rebuilding your state in agriculture and water and so many other areas, and security as well. We welcome you in Israel with an open heart and open arms.” Netanyahu also addressed last week’s UNESCO votes undermining Israel’s connections to Jerusalem and Hebron: Speaking to Kagame he said, "We see how you stand up for Israel in international forums. You already expressed a principle that we believe in that bilateral relations should be reflected in multilateral forums. There is a dissonance, obviously between us and quite a few nations still. We saw that in the absurd vote in UNESCO that said that King David, depicted there with a harp, was not in Jerusalem, he was in Tibet. His son, Solomon, didn't build the temple in Jerusalem, he built it in South America, I don't know. I mean, it's absurd, the whole denial of history… of the Bible." (Arutz-7)
HALEY CALLS UNESCO HEBRON MOTION “AN AFFRONT TO HISTORY”:
USA Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said following last week’s UN vote: "UNESCO has voted to designate the Old City of Hebron and the Tomb of the Patriarchs as part of Palestinian territory and a World Heritage site despite protests by the United States, Israel, and other countries. The UNESCO vote on Hebron is tragic. It represents an affront to history. And it further discredits an already highly questionable UN agency. Today's vote does no one any good and causes much harm." PM Netanyahu responded to the motion by calling the measure “another delusional UNESCO decision” and ordered that $1 million be pulled from Israel’s UN funding to establish a museum showcasing Jewish heritage in Hebron. IRAQI FORCES DECLARE VICTORY OVER ISIS IN MOSUL, BUT FIGHTING CONTINUES:
Iraq’s prime minister entered the city of Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, on 9 July 2017 to declare victory in the nine-month battle for control of the former stronghold of the ISIS terror group. The victory signals the near end of the most grueling campaign against the group to date and dealing a near-fatal blow to the survival of its self-declared caliphate. On a walk through the city’s eastern districts, Haider al-Abadi was thronged by men holding camera-phones as music blared and others danced in the streets. “The world did not imagine that Iraqis could eliminate Daesh,” he said, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS. “This is all a result of the sacrifices of the heroic fighters who impressed the world with their courage.” But in a sign of how tenaciously ISIS has fought, even as Abadi was touring the town, the sound of airstrikes echoed through the skies and smoke rose from the last pocket of territory the terrorists control, thought to be no more than 200 yards long and 50 yards wide. DESPITE CEASEFIRE DEAL, IRANIAN STRONGHOLD IN SYRIAN GOLAN STILL POSSIBLE:
A ceasefire agreement in southwestern Syria, which went into effect on 9 July 2017 freezes the situation in the areas controlled by the Syrian regime, the areas controlled by militias operating on behalf of Iran, the Lebanon-based Hezbollah terrorist group and the areas controlled by the rebels. For now, as a result, the Iranians and their proxies are unable to create a land corridor connecting Tehran and Beirut and flanking Jordan and Israel. However, the agreement fails to completely remove the Iranian militias and Hezbollah from the area, currently 40 km. from the Golan border. This means that if and when the ceasefire is violated, the forces supported by Iran and Hezbollah would be able to continue their advance towards creating a strategic corridor to the Mediterranean Sea and establish a stronghold in the Golan Heights. Assad and the Iranians have realized that they are incapable of conquering the city of Daraa on the Jordanian border and that the rebels are successfully attacking them near new Quneitra in the Golan Heights, so they agreed to a ceasefire. But the moment the Syrian regime and the Iranians conclude they are strong enough to reoccupy Daraa, they will do it without any hesitation. (Ynet)
