IDF BOOSTS PRESENCE IN JUDEA & SAMARIA AS TEMPLE MOUNT TENSIONS FLARE:
With tensions still high in Jerusalem’s Temple Mount Complex, the Israeli army placed five extra battalions on alert in Judea & Samaria ahead of Friday Muslim prayers. The announcement that the thousands of extra troops were to be placed on call came as security services geared up for clashes expected in Jerusalem and Judea & Samaria on Friday 21 July 2017 as a large number of Muslim worshipers were anticipated to try to make their way to the Temple Mount Complex. The Political-Security Cabinet decided on Thurs. night, 20 July, after a four-hour meeting, that the metal detectors will remain at the entrance to the Temple Mount as part of the new security measures at the compound.
A terror attack last week in Jerusalem’s Old City left two Israeli police officers dead and resulted in the government placing metal detectors at its entrances. Clashes broke out in Judea & Samaria on Wed. 19 July 2017 after Fatah announced a “Day of Rage” encouraging Palestinians to demonstrate the placing of the metal detectors. According to Former Shin-Bet head, MK Yaakov Perr, while the “situation is very fragile and sensitive,” the placing of metal detectors does not mean a change in the status quo. “Every holy sensitive place in the world is protected,” he said. “After this terrorist act the conclusion to tighten the security belt and add these electronic gates was not a political decision but a security one.” (J.Post)
CLASHES IN JERUSALEM FOLLOWING NOON PRAYER:
Palestinians and police clashed near Lions' Gate following the noon prayer on Friday 21 July 2017. Muslim worshipers also protested and clashed with police forces in Salah a-Din street in East Jerusalem and in Ras al-Amoud. Clashes were also reported at the Kalandia checkpoint and protests were held in Bethlehem, Tulkaram, Jericho and Hebron. Police said that clashes started after the rioters started to throw stones at the security forces. Police used water cannons to disperse the rioters. Inside the Old City, worshipers gathered after the prayer to protest and rioters there were dispersed by stun grenades. According to Palestinian reports, 10 residents were arrested in East Jerusalem, among them were Fatah officials. Some 400 Muslims attended the prayer next to the Gate of the Tribes. Before the prayer, the preacher called on the attendees to be patient, and said that “the Jews, that are occupying Palestine, are on their way to hell.” Prayers were held all over the Old City, mainly next to police checkpoints. Palestinians are demonstrating against the recently installed metal detectors at the gates of Temple Mount. (J.Post)
WHITE HOUSE ‘VERY CONCERNED’ OVER TEMPLE MOUNT:
The White House is “very concerned” over tensions surrounding Jerusalem’s Temple Mount complex, it said in a statement this week urging Israel and Jordan to restore calm to the area after days of violent clashes. It added that Washington would “continue to closely monitor the developments.” Muslim worshipers have been protesting Israel’s decision to install metal detectors and other security measures at entrances to the holy site in the wake of a deadly terror attack near there on Friday 14 July 2017, saying the move breaks the delicate status quo agreement between Jerusalem and Amman. On Wed. 19 July 2017 rioters clashed with Israeli police at sites around Jerusalem as part of a “day of rage” called to protest the metal detectors, the fourth straight day of violence stemming from the move. (Times of Israel)
Jews, Christians and other visitors going to the Kotel (Western Wall) must pass through metal detectors. In Mecca there are 5,000 CCTV cameras and 100,000 people employed to provide security during the annual Hajj. At St. Peter's Square in the Vatican in Rome, metal detectors have been installed and photos show nuns and the faithful passing through them. But as Israel increases security measures in the wake of three brutal terrorist murders in Jerusalem’s Old City in little over a month’s time the Arab World is insulted and ready to take up arms. It is a necessary measure to protect lives from Palestinian terrorists. If it were not for persistent Islamic hatred and violence against Israel, such precautions would not be necessary.
USA URGES WORLD PRESSURE TO HALT HEZBOLLAH ARMS BUILDUP:
USA Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley met with UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Sigrid Kaag on Wed.19 July 2017 to discuss ways to advance the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701. The resolution ended the war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006 and called for the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon. Haley emphasized the need for the international community to “apply more pressure on Hezbollah to disarm and cease its destabilizing behavior, especially toward Israel.” She expressed alarm over the build-up of weapons by Hezbollah, describing it as “a situation that demands the international community’s attention to prevent the further escalation of regional tensions.” Ambassador Haley noted the need for the UN Interim Force in Lebanon to be fully engaged in addressing the threat posed by the terrorist organization.
According to the IDF, Hezbollah has been establishing observation posts under the guise of a NGO named “Green Without Borders” near the Blue Line between Lebanon and Israel since April 2017. On 18 July 2017 the army released additional footage of Hezbollah members gathering intelligence on Israel, saying that the Iran-backed Lebanese group continues to use the NGO as a front for information gathering in order to harm Israel. “Hezbollah is gaining ground in southern Lebanon, and has even established a military infrastructure of rockets aimed at northern Israel, knowing that it is endangering civilians in south Lebanon,” the IDF said. (J.Post/Times of Israel)
ISRAEL WILL DESTROY LEBANON’S INFRASTRUCTURE IN NEXT WAR:
Israel’s former defense minister Moshe Ya'alon said to a Saudi news website that the decisions in Lebanon are made by the Iranian supreme leader, Ali Khameini, and not by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. In the recent interview on the London-based "Elaph," Ya'alon pointed to Iran as governing the actions of the terrorist group Hezbollah, its proxy group in Lebanon, and the implications for Israel. "There is no nation called Lebanon, the decisions are made by Iran and not by the president or Nasrallah," Ya'alon said. "If Khamenei wants war, then Lebanon will go to war, and every Lebanese person will suffer from the next war because all infrastructure will be destroyed." Hezbollah earlier in the month vowed to “surprise Israel” during any upcoming war between the Lebanese Shi’ite terror group and the Jewish state. (INN)
NEW USA REPORT BLASTS IRAN AS ‘LEADING SPONSOR’ OF TERRORISM:
In a new report, the USA State Department on 19 July 2017 labeled Iran the world's top government sponsor of terrorism. The report highlights Iran's arming of Hezbollah in Lebanon and anti-Israel groups like Hamas, plus its support for Syrian President Assad. It notes that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps served as the government's "primary mechanism for cultivating and supporting terrorists abroad." (LA Times)
PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY’S 2017 SHOWS ‘HUGE INCREASE’ IN FUNDING FOR TERROR PAYMENTS:
The Palestinian Authority’s 2017 budget shows a “huge increase” in the funding of salaries for imprisoned terrorists and the families of “martyrs,” an Israeli research institute revealed this week. According to Palestinian Media Watch, the amount of money allocated by the PA for payments to terrorists jailed in Israel rose 13% this year to $158 million - compared to $135 million in 2016. During the same time frame, disbursements for family members of dead terrorists increased by 4% - to $197 million from $183 million. Overall, PMW said, the PA is spending $355 million this year on the direct funding of terrorism. (Algemeiner)
ISRAEL AIDING 200,000 SYRIANS LIVING NEAR BORDER:
The IDF is working with international organizations to transfer aid to over 200,000 Syrians living close to the Israeli border. In the past year alone, the IDF has given to Syrian civilians over 360 tons of food and flour, 456,000 liters of gas, 100 tons of clothes (55 tons of warm clothes), 12 tons of shoes, as well as generators and mobile caravans to use as clinics or classrooms. Additional aid included 12,000 packages of baby formula, 1,800 packages of diapers, and 600 meters of piping to re-establish ruined water infrastructure, giving 5,000 people running water. This is in addition to the over 3,000 wounded and sick Syrians who have been treated in Israel since 2013. "Once a week a busload of sick children comes into Israel," said Brig.-Gen. Yaniv Ashur. (J. Post)
